Theory:

Sentences in English need 2 verbs. The second verb is usually a normal verb like play, but the first verb is a special verb, and there are 2 types, AUXILLIARY VERBS and MODAL VERBS:

My brother DOES NOT speak French.

Speak is the normal verb and DOES is the auxilliary verb.

My brother can speak French.

Speak is the normal verb and CAN is the modal verb.
