Desert Tortoises

Desert tortoises live (1) the deserts between the US and Mexico. During the summer, the temperature (2) the ground where they live gets very very hot. To beat the heat, desert tortoises use their strong legs and nails (3) dig holes in the ground (4) they can hide from the sun. Some of these tortoise tunnels are very long, and they can get pretty crowded. As many (5) 25 desert tortoises might live together in one hole. The animals also dig grooves (6) the ground's surface to catch rainwater. After a storm, they return to these holes to drink the water that's collected inside. Once it's had a good drink, a desert tortoise can go up (7) a year without needing fresh water again. A tortoise stores the water it drinks in (8) stomach and can use the liquid later when it feels dry.
