2 Different kinds of sentences

Instructions:

You are given a block of text which explains the theory of this concept.

Once you have read the theory, do the exercises given below to test how well you have understood the ideas.

 

How to do the Exercises:

 

You are given a set of words.

You are also given some sentences with input boxes, and you are required to use the words to complete the sentences correctly.

 

You can put your chosen word into the input box by first clicking on the word and then in the input box.

 

The word will appear in the input box.

 

If it is correct, it will go green, and if not, it will go red.

2 Different kinds of sentences

Theory:

There are many kinds of sentences, but the easiest way to classify them is by describing either how they are constructed, or the grammatical function they use.


If we talk about their construction, we have 4 main types:

Simple sentences

Compound sentences

Complex sentences

Complex compound sentences


We can also talk about long and short sentences, and the ones mentioned above are either long or short sentences.


Later on we will be looking at sentences which use more advanced gramatical structures, such as:

Conditional Sentences

Cleft Sentences

Inversion and Fronting

Concession, Contrast and Refutation


Before we start looking at the individual sentences, we need to understand that examiners look for a variety of sentence lengths and structures in all speaking and writing work.


Students need to understand the kinds of sentences that can be constructed and how to use them efficiently.


We will be looking at how to incorporate these sentence types into a text.
