3 The 8 Combined Vowel sounds (Diphthongs)
Continuing with a look at the 20 vowel sounds, there are 12 individual vowel sounds and 8 combined vowel sounds, which are called diphthongs.
A combined vowel sound starts as one vowel sound but finishes as another.
- The O in phOne sounds like O as in dOg at the beginning, but like U as in fOOd at the end.
There are 8 such combined vowel sounds, which are:
- 1) EA as in hEAr,
- 2) UA as in pOOr,
- 3) EA as in hAIr,
- 4) AE as in gAte,
- 5) OE as in tOY,
- 6) AE as in EYE,
- 7) OU as in nO, and finally,
- 8) AU as in nOW.
