Word Groups 1 - General

There are many elements somebody learning English needs to understand.
- The Alphabet.
- Syllable formation.
- The creation of words and then sentences.

One of the most important things to learn in English is how words form groups, and there are many types.
- Collocations.
- Phrasal Verbs.
- Idioms.
- Compound Nouns.

These groups can sometimes look similar, but they are all different.

A COLLOCATION is a group of words which each have their unique meaning, but which naturally come together. Their meaning is not affected:
- MAKE A MISTAKE.

PHRASAL VERBS are formed by a verb and a preposition, and the grouping has a unique meaning which is different from that of the verb which forms the phrasal verb.
- MAKE UP.

An IDIOM is a group of words where the group has a unique meaning which is not connected to the individual words in the group.
- MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINES.

A COMPOUND NOUN is formed when two nouns come together, and its meaning is different from each individual noun.
- TOOTHBRUSH.

These word groupings are widely used in natural spoken English, and without understanding them, fluency is not possible.
